JANUARY TRANSFER WINDOW...MOURINHO GETS READY TO BUY ANOTHER STRIKER...WILL IT BE SUAREZ?

Jose set for spending spree: Chelsea boss given go ahead to sign a new striker in the January transfer window

Jose Mourinho has been given the green light to sign a new striker in the January transfer window to help Chelsea's title challenge.

Mourinho is privately frustrated that £50m forward Fernando Torres and Champions League-winning striker Samuel Eto'o have scored just one goal each in the Barclays Premier League.

Demba Ba, the club's third choice forward, has not scored in the Premier League since scoring the winner against West Bromwich on March 2.

Misfiring: Both Fernando Torres and Samuel Eto'o have struggled to regularly find the net this season

Chelsea are five points behind leaders Arsenal after their shock 2-0 defeat at Newcastle, but Mourinho had already decided to make changes up front.

The Chelsea manager is determined to add goals to his team in the second half of the season and the search has already begun for the attacking options to make the difference.

Chelsea's search in Europe is likely to be restricted to players who are not cup-tied in the Champions League, but that will not stop them searching for a solution.

Liverpool forward Luis Suarez fits Chelsea's profile and is not cup-tied, but he will not be sold this season.

Despite some obvious improvement in Torres' game, he was substituted during the 2-0 defeat at Newcastle on Saturday after failing to score.

He was replaced by Eto'o, who won the Champions League with Mourinho at Inter Milan in 2010, but the move has not been a success so far. His only goal for Chelsea in the Premier League since his move from Anzhi Makhachkala was in the 4-1 victory over Cardiff on October 19.

Not an option: Romelu Lukaku can't be recalled from his loan

Demba Ba, who is Mourinho's third attacking option, is not considered good enough to start at the very highest level.

Romelu Lukaku is on loan at Everton for the rest of the season and cannot be recalled in January.

Mourinho's options will be limited in the transfer window, but Chelsea are determined to press on with plans to bring in another forward.

Chelsea turned away Columbian forward Falcao in the summer because he lacked movement outside the box. Instead he signed for Monaco and has already scored 10 goals this season.

Mourinho was angry with his players at St James' Park on Saturday because his pre-match team talk at Arsenal was centred on the fight for places in the team.

The shadow squad responded with a 2-0 victory at the Emirates, but he changed his line-up for the defeat at Newcastle.
