ASUU dares FG over sack

Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities [ASUU], Calabar Zone, has reacted angrily to the order to return to the classrooms issued to them by the Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, saying that the action would worsen the strike action rather than solving the problem.

ASUU accused the minister of deceiving  President Jonathan on the crisis, alleging that Wike and some other unnamed officials of the Government did not want the lingering problem between the union and the Federal Government to be resolved.

According to the zonal coordinator of ASUU Calabar zone, Dr. Charles Ononuju, with such threat the crisis would linger far longer than expected.

In a statement in Umuahia,. Ononuju said that the union received with shock the pronouncement by the supervising minister, saying the crisis could not be resolved that way.

“We received with shock the pronouncement of by the Supervising Minister of Education, Wike, that lecturers should resume work or be sacked”, Ononuju said.

He said that the union had gone far with discussion on how to resolve the crisis and was waiting for President Goodluck Jonathan’s reply to their letter after their meeting when the minister came up with the “unfortunate” pronouncement.

“Sacking lecturers will not solve the problem but will compound it. Wike should resign and come to the university and teach. This is not the way to go if they go this way, the crisis will not be resolved in the next 100 years”, he warned

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it has designated 256 centres for the 2014/2015 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) Computer Based Test (CBT) across the country.

Mr Fabian Benjamin, the board’s Head of Public Relations, made the disclosure in a telephone interview on Monday in Lagos.
Benjamin said that the centres were increased from 56 in 2012/2013 to 256 for the forthcoming examination.
He said that the increase was made to accommodate the large number of candidates applying for the CBT.

“Application form is out; preparation for the technical aspect is in top gear and we are always ready.
“Centres that had hitches during the 2012/2013 examination will be corrected, while some may not be used.
“What we already have on ground is close to perfection,“ he said.

The board, in an earlier statement, had announced the commencement of the sale of the application forms for the 2014/2015 academic session UTME.

It advised qualified candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria that online registration would be on until March 14, 2014, while the website would be closed on March 25.

JAMB said that the examination would be conducted on April 5, 2014 for those writing the Paper Pencil Test (PPT) and Dual Based Test (DBT).

It said that the date for the Computer Based Test (CBT) would be announced later.
The board said that the examination centres of the candidates would depend on their chosen towns during online registration.

How to be successful in Jamb 2014 Examination

Tip 1. Following the words of the JAMB Registrar after the 2013 exercise, Prof Dibu Ojerinde said: “We have gone digital in JAMB.” What he meant by ‘going digital’ is that  in the Jamb 2014/2015 UTME examination the Computer Based Test is likely to be more popular than it was in 2013 . To avoid surprises in the exam hall, we encourage participants to learn how to operate a computer system which is as simple as ABC. In the examination hall, your computer will be “timed”  and when it reaches the allotted time, it will switch off, even if you have not answered any question! So the call to be fast is important.

Tip 2. All admission-seeking candidates in the Jamb 2014, mostly candidates from  the Southern states are advised to make early registrations  to avoid missing out on available centers. Last season (Jamb 2013), with a record number of 1.8 million candidates centres were exhausted  within three months of beginning of registrations, and late registrants were pushed to the North, north east and north central zones  to take their examinations.If you are not used to the the north, why risk going there to write your Jamb exam? A lot of candidates missed  last year’s jamb exams due to this problem.So we encourage you to purchase the form  and register VERY EARLY!

Tip 3. Applicants who wrote the JAMB 2013/2014 UTME examination and selected the Paper and Pencil Type (PPT) were basically victims of various inefficiencies of by the board, with majority of them, forced to settle with scores that are not theirs. We therefore advise candidates applying for the JAMB 2014/2015 UTME to thread carefully, on what  type of exam to select, We recommend the Computer Based Test (CBT) and if you are good with computers, and there is no need to be scared of it. From last year’s experience, many candidates who chose CBT came out with flying colours.

Tip 4. From statistics, over 1.8 million students registered  for the 2013 exams but less than 500,000  were going to be admitted.Let us also note that  about 1.2 million students may also be in their final secondary school years now.So more than 2 million candidates may  participate in the next exams in 2014. Tip 5. Only very confident candidates should select from the most popular institutions such as UNILAG,OAU,UI,UNN,UNIBEN,UNILORIN,UNIZIK,FUTO,UNIPORT,ABU...


These are about the most popular institutions in Nigeria. The reason why we recommend that you stay away from these universities is to boost your chances of admission and not because you are not intelligent, Admission slots are very limited and the competition for these institutions is fiercer. Also if a Federal University is not your catchment area, then your chances of getting admitted is equal to zero. But still, if you must choose any of them please also look for courses that are not too competitive. Take note of all these before you register.


Tips 6. All candidates  are  also advised to be very careful in their selection of courses.It is no news that the following courses USUALLY have the highest number of applicants.
• Medicine And Surgery
• Economics
• Accounting
• Law/Civil Law
• Pharmacy etc.
• Mechanical Engr/Civil/Elect Elect etc.

Selecting one of the above means you will be competing with thousands of candidates for the space, which is likely to be lesser than hundreds in all the Institutions. But if you are however interested in any of the above courses, you must learn how to balance your selections appropriately to increase your chances of getting admitted. Ensure you also select courses such as EDUCATION that have fewer numbers of candidates. By so doing, you can be sure of a higher probability of admission.You may thereafter apply for a change of course after been admitted. This suggestion is to  boost your chances of and not because you are not intelligent.The reality is that the slots of many of these courses are limited, competition is higher and you are getting older.After factoring in ASUU there is a possibility may get discouraged or age  before ones time. Hence, make hay while the sun shines.

Tip 7. These days it has also become important  that you know about the accreditation status of the course(s) you want to apply for in your choice Institutions before submitting your application.

What is accreditation of  a course?
Some university offer courses that have not been approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC), and if you end up in one of those departments not eventually approved you would have wasted your years for nothing. You won’t be given any original certificate by the University! For example; Medicine and Surgery has NOT been accredited in the Benue State University, BSUM and many others Universities, and candidates  admitted there might  end up spending 8+ years in vain.

How will you know if your course has been accredited in your choice institution?
You can know this from the Jamb 2014 Brochure that will be given to you when you purchase the Jamb 2014-2015 UTME Form.


Tip 8. Most Institutions require a cut-off of 240 in the JAMB-UTME. (example of such institution is University of Ilorin) the minimum cut off for Medicine in Unilorin is 240 and 220+ for major courses, while admission at the University of Ibadan and Unilag begins with your O-Level results, therefore, its very important that you have the basic requirements of the Institution before applying for admission. In fact, this apply to almost all the Institutions in Nigeria. Ensure you have your COMPLETE O’LEVEL RESULTS for your chosen courses before buying Jamb, if you don’t have… you are only going to frustrate yourself. Even when you are admitted, you will be screened out after they collect your acceptance  and school fees.

Tip 9. DO NOT apply for admission into Institutions outside your catchment areas.You lower your chances of being admitted by doing so

Primate Babatunde Ayodele, General Overseer of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Lagos, bares his mind on the proposed National Conference, Nigeria’s fate in the hands of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in 2015, the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, airplane crashes and the crisis rocking the polity. Excerpts:

Is there any spiritual undertone to airplane crashes  in Nigeria?

There is. When there is a cleansing for the whole nation, then the aviation sector will be calm. For now, there are still going to be troubles in the sector and some ministers will be removed from the cabinet. I could see some averted plane crashes, but still, I advise that the air force and police watch their aircraft very well. The presidential fleet should also be guarded against technical faults.

Nigerians do not respect God, that is why the Dana plane crash occurred the other time despite warnings from God. That also is exactly what is affecting this government. There’s going to be a lot of political turmoil in the polity. Governor Rotimi Amaechi particularly has to be very careful because they want to ground him politically; they want to rubbish him.

He also should manage his court cases well. Kwara State’s Bukola too should manage his court cases so they are not used against him. Akpabio and Presidency will face challenges. The seven governors in the New Peoples Democratic Party-nPDP- will come back to
PDP; they’re just wasting their time. The All Progressive Congress, APC, will be a strong opposition but it will not be able to overthrow the PDP in 2015.

In the end, where are these leading us; will they work in our favour as a nation?

Nigeria needs a lot of prayers to avert dangers ahead. I’ve said it several times that Nigeria is  going to break. Even this National Conference will take us nowhere! Kidnapping for instance has come to stay! Government will only do its best but it is coming to the South-west as well.   Before Nigeria splits however, we need prayers to sustain the country and end disasters. The problem is that we have a president who has turned deaf hears to the word of God. AndCAN is unfortunately nothing to write about.

You just said the national confab will lead us nowhere while most people seem optimistic about it…

There will be elections in 2015. However, the National Conference is a mere waste of resources and time because nothing will come out of it. Even when decisions are taken at the end of the conference, they will not be executed. When the time comes for a genuine National Conference, you will see the signs and be convinced. But this particular conference has a lot of political undertones which I will not disclose because I am speaking as a prophet, not a political analyst. I therefore want to rename it a ‘corrupt national conference’.

But is Jonathan the best candidate for 2015?

Jonathan’s second term will cause some problem in this country. I see republics coming out. Mind you, may have more pipeline explosions and bombing is not over. Jonathan is not fighting Boko Haram the way he is supposed to fight it! The truth is, Boko Haram is more spiritual than physical and until the sect is weakened spiritually, it will not go.

Are you indirectly advising Jonathan to step down since you’ve said his second term will not be fantastic?

If I say he should step down, he will not listen. So, I will let him go and see the consequences. The only way forward is to consult God. By a very slim chance, he will get his second term, but that second term will not be fantastic.

Where exactly has CAN gone wrong?

They go to Mr.President every now and then, why can they not advise him on what to do and what not to do? Truth is bitter but you have to say it! CAN is political! Ayo Oritsejafor is not operating as CAN but as a Christian politician. CAN is blindfolded and there is no leadership in it.  That’s why we’re getting so many things wrong in Christendom.

CAN doesn’t know how many churches we have in the country, it has not created any youth empowerment or pastors’ empowerment. CAN should be scrapped. Christianity is not how rich you are but how well you’ve been able to touch the lives of others. CAN should employ not less than 20,000 youths and should do something about women, widows. The truth is: Ayo Oritsejafor is a politician and  not a pastor. If any white garment church should invite Ayo, he won’t go! We need somebody who is more vibrant as CAN leader.

What if he is turning down their invitations because he doesn’t see them to be genuine?

Is he God to say a church is not genuine? Any man who does that is not a pastor! It’s not your right to say you are holy!

But the Bible says God has blessed us with the spirit of discernment…

Can Ayo see? Is he a prophet? How can he tell me his spirit discerns? White garment churches are among the best worldwide! That’s why you see influential men and women going to them for prayers! Why don’t they remain in their Pentecostal churches? Even pastors from Pentecostal churches go to white garment churches to consult privately and get spiritual powers. I am a godfather to many Pentecostal churches but I have no godfather! God is my only father in the Lord!

Apply Now For 2014/15 SHELL Niger-Delta Postgraduate Scholarship

Application is ongoing for the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) sponsored SPDC Niger Delta Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme for applicants from Rivers, Delta and Bayelsa States.

As a key objective, the scholarship scheme  is aimed at providing an opportunity for qualifying students from the three Niger Delta States to further their education in courses that are relevant to the oil and gas industry.

The competition for 2014/15 is now open and the closing date is 24 January 2014.

Eligibility

To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must:

1. display intellectual ability and leadership potential;
2. meet the university’s language requirement (usually at least 6.5 in IELTS);
3. be aged between 21-28 years;
4. be an indigene of rivers, Delta or Bayelsa States (documentary proof of this will be required);
5. currently reside in Nigeria;
6. intend to return and take up permanent residence in Nigeria after completion of the proposed programme of study;
7. have obtained a university degree of at least an equivalent standard to a UK Second Class Upper (Honours Degree);
8. be neither a current nor former employee (having left employment within the last five years) of SPDC, the Royal Dutch Shell Group of Companies or Karamat Ltd., or

9. be related to current employees of any of these companies;

In order to be considered for the scholarship, candidates must apply to study on one of the three eligible programmes through the standard Imperial College admission procedure by 24 January 2014.

The course presents the methods and practices of the modern petroleum industry, with considerable emphasis on developing transferable skills.

The minimum entrance requirement is an Upper Second Class Honours (2:1) degree in an earth science-based subject from a UK University or its equivalent.

Graduates with other closely related earth/environmental‘ science degrees (physical geography or oceanography, for example) will also be considered.

  The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB)  began the sale of application forms into the nation’s tertiary Institutions a while ago. The early sale of the application forms is to enable Nigerians desirous of tertiary education have access to the forms so that they could prepare ahead for the examination slated for April, 2014.

According to a statement issued in Abuja by JAMB’s spokesman, Fabian Benjamin, the two modes of tests hitherto conducted by JAMB- the Paper and Pencil Test (PPT) and Computer Based Test (CBT) – are still opened to prospective candidates for the 2014 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Candidates across the globe who have successfully completed their secondary school education with a minimum of six (6) credits, including the English Language and Mathematics, are expected to obtain the forms at the designated banks and register with the approved cyber cafés across Nigeria and at the Nigeria High Commission Offices in Ghana, United Kingdom (UK), South Africa (SA), Cameroon, Jeddah and Biu.

Candidates are urged to ensure that their data are well captured at the cyber cafés and their subject choices are accurately entered. The JAMB Registrar, Prof. ‘Dibu Ojerinde, urged parents, guardians and café operators to ensure that candidates are well guided in the filling of the forms to avoid wrong filling and unwholesome practices that may affect their choices.

The public is also urged to note that candidates will be tested on two general books to enhance their reading culture, irrespective of their courses. The books are

WEST AFRICAN SENIOR SCHOOL CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION- ENGLISH LANGUAGE SYLLABUS ( Nigeria  Only)

THE SCOPE OF THE SYLLABUS
This examination sets out to test the different basic skills of communication in English using the mediums of speech and writing. The examination will test the receptive and productive abilities of candidates. These abilities will be demonstrated in the following forms: Reading Comprehension, Summary, Vocabulary, Lexis and Structure, Listening Comprehension and Recognition of different aspects of English speech.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
The objective of the syllabus is to measure the extent to which the aims of the teaching syllabuses of member countries have been realized in candidates‟ Secondary School career. The examination sets out to examine candidates‟ ability to
(i) use correct English;
(ii) write about incidents in English that are appropriate to specified audiences
and situations;
(iii) organize materials in paragraphs that are chronologically, spatially and logically coherent;
(iv) control sentence structures accurately;
(v) exhibit variety in the choice of sentence patterns;
(vi) comply with the rules of grammar, spelling and punctuation;
(vii) comprehend written and spoken English;
(viii) recognize implied meaning, tones and attitudes;
(ix) use an acceptable pronunciation that can be comprehended by others;
(x) isolate and summarize relevant information from set passages.

OUTLINE
Candidates will be required to take three papers. Total marks for the three papers will be 220 marks for The Gambia and Sierra Leone and 200 for Nigeria.
PAPER 1: 2½ hours - Essay Writing, Comprehension and Summary - 120 marks
PAPER 2: 1 hour - Multiple Choice questions (Lexis and Structure) - 50 marks
PAPER 3: 45 minutes – Test of Orals – 30 marks (for Nigeria only).

WEST AFRICAN SENIOR SCHOOL CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION- ENGLISH LANGUAGE-DETAILED SYLLABUS

PAPER 1: This paper will be divided into three sections (A, B and C).

SECTION A: ESSAY WRITING (50 marks)

Candidates will be required to spend 50 minutes on this section. There will be five questions in all and candidates will be required to answer only one question.
The questions will test candidates‟ ability to communicate in writing. The topics will demand the following kinds of writing:
(i) letter;
(ii) speech;
(iii) narrative;
(iv) description;
(v) debate/argumentative;
(vi) report;
(vii) article;
(viii) exposition;
(ix) creative writing.

Credit will be given for
(i) Content: relevance of ideas to the topic and its specified audience and purpose;
(ii) Organization: formal features (where applicable), good paragraphing, appropriate emphasis and arrangement of ideas;
(iii) Expression: control of vocabulary and sentence structure;
(iv) Mechanical Accuracy: grammar, punctuation and spelling.
The minimum length expected will be 450 words.

SECTION B: COMPREHENSION (40 marks)

Candidates will be required to spend 50 minutes on this section. The section will consist of two passages each of about three hundred (300) words. Candidates will be required to answer questions on the two passages.
The questions will test the candidate‟s ability to
(i) find appropriate equivalents for selected words and phrases;
(ii) understand the factual content;
(iii) make inferences from the content of the passages;
(iv) respond to uses of English expressions to reveal/reflect sentiments/emotions/attitudes;
(v) identify and label basic grammatical structures, words, phrases or clauses and explain their functions as they appear in the context;
(vi) identify and explain basic literary terms and expressions;
(vii) recast phrases or sentences into grammatical alternatives.
The passages will be chosen from a wide variety of sources all of which will be suitable for this level of examination in terms of theme and interest. The passages will be written in modern English that will be within the experience of candidates. The comprehension test will include a total of three questions based on (vi) above in any one paper.

SECTION C: SUMMARY (30 marks)

Candidates will be required to spend 50 minutes on this section. The section will consist of one prose passage of about five hundred (500) words and will test the candidate‟s ability to
(i) extract relevant information;
(ii) summarize the points demanded in clear, concise English;
(iii) present a summary of specific aspects or portions of the passage;
(iv) avoid repetition, redundancy and extraneous material.
The passage will be selected from a wide variety of suitable sources, including excerpts from narratives, dialogues and expositions of social, cultural, economic and political issues in any part of the world.

PAPER 2: This is an objective/multiple choice paper comprising 100 questions: 40 lexical and 60 structural items. Each question/item will have four options lettered A to D.

A. LEXIS

In addition to items testing knowledge of the vocabulary of everyday usage (i.e. home, social relationships, common core school subjects) questions will be set to test the candidate‟s ability in the use of the more general vocabulary associated with the following fields of human activity:
I. (a) Building;
(b) Plumbing;
(c) Fishing;
(d) Finance – commerce, banking, stock exchange, insurance;
(e) Photography;
(f) Mineral exploitation;
(g) Common manufacturing industries;
(h) Printing, publishing, the press and libraries;
(i) Sea, road, rail and air transport;
(j) Government and politics;
(k) Sports and entertainment;
(l) Religion;
(m) Science and Technology;
(n) Power production – hydro, thermal, solar;
(o) Education;
(p) Transport and Communication;
(q) Military;
(r) Journalism and Advertising.
II. Idioms, i.e. idiomatic expressions and collocations (e.g. “hook, line and sinker”, “every Tom, Dick and Harry” etc.) the total meaning of which cannot be arrived at simply by consideration of the dictionary meanings of the words in the structures in which they appear.
III. Structural elements of English e.g. sequence of tenses, matching of pronouns with noun referents, use of correct prepositions.
IV. Figurative usage
By “more general” vocabulary is meant those words and usages of words normally associated with the field of human activity in question which are generally known, used and understood by most educated people who while not engaged in that field of activity may have occasion to read, speak or write about it. Thus, for example, in the vocabulary of transportation by sea, one would expect knowledge of terms such as “bridge” and “deck”, which most educated people understand, but not “halyard”, “dodge”, “davit” or “thrust block”, which are specialized.
All items will be phrased in such a way as to test the use and understanding of the required lexis, rather than dictionary definitions and explanations. In practice, the test of lexis will be so designed as to explore, not merely the extent of the candidates‟ vocabulary but more importantly their ability to respond to sense relations in the use of lexical items e.g. synonyms, antonyms and homonyms.
In the testing of figurative language, candidates will be expected to recognize when an expression is used figuratively rather than literally.

B. STRUCTURE

Structure here is used to include:
(i) The patterns of changes in word-forms which indicate number, tense, degree, etc.;
(ii) The patterns in which different categories of words regularly combine to form groups and these groups in turn combine to form sentences;
(iii) The use of structural words e.g. conjunctions, articles, determiners, prepositions, etc.

PAPER 3 ORAL ENGLISH (30 marks)
This paper will test candidates‟ knowledge of Oral English.

ALTERNATIVE C: TEST OF ORALS (For School and Private Candidates in Nigeria)A Test of Orals format is a multiple-choice paper of 60 items testing a wide range of areas or aspects of Orals as contained in the syllabus.

The Test of Orals will cover the following areas:
(1) Vowels – pure vowels and diphthongs;
(2) Consonants (including clusters);
(3) Rhymes;
(4) Word Stress/Syllable Structure;
(5) Emphatic Stress/Intonation Patterns;
(6) Phonetic Symbols.
The items to be tested in the specified areas are in accordance with the following blueprint:

BREAKING!...LECTURER ARRESTED AS KOGI SPIRITUAL LEADER FOR BOKO HARAM DENIES POLICE CLAIMS...WHO IS TELLING THE TRUTH?

Lecturer, 4 other suspects paraded as Boko Haram members  

Nigeria’s Department of State Services said it uncovered a Boko Haram cell in the central Nigerian state of Kogi and arrested five persons, including a university teacher.

Miss Marilyn Ogar, the Deputy Director, Public Relations Department of State Services, claimed in Abuja that the suspects were allegedly plotting to launch violent attacks in Igalaland in Kogi.

She said the don, identified as Muhammed Yunus, taught Arabic and Islamic Studies at the Kogi state University, Ayingba.



Ogar, who presented the suspects to newsmen, said that three of the suspects were arrested in a mosque in Zuba, FCT, while two others were arrested in Jos and Kogi respectively.

She said one of the suspects, the lecturer, was the spiritual leader and recruitment coordinator while others were head of operations/instructor, chief courier and foot soldiers in Kogi.

“We want to enjoin all Nigerians to be vigilant and continue to cooperate with security agencies through the provision of useful information of suspicious activities within their immediate environment.

“The war on terror is still on; this service, in collaboration with other security agencies, will not rest on their oars until we rid our society of criminality.



Ogar urged parents, who sent their children for Islamic teaching after school, to be very careful of the people they chose as their teachers.

She said they should take time to investigate the teachings so as to ensure that their children were not being taught what the parents did not practise.

The lecturer, who was alleged to be the spiritual leader/recruitment coordinator of the group, denied knowing anything about the sect but admitted that he held several preaching sessions.

“ I have never been a member of Boko Haram for one minute in my life, I even preach against them,” he said.

Other members confessed to be members of the sect and that they were on their way for training in Maiduguri when they were arrested at Zuba.

One of the suspects said he joined the group in May and was employed by the sect on a salary of N50,000 per month.

After ASUU …

THERE is a paradox governments have  built around education — they are spending billions of Naira on education, yet the financial issues around education are not being resolved. The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, strike is only one of many matters that are dogging education.

Government’s supposed interests in negotiating with ASUU, the speed being applied, and the uttermost neglect of other aspects of education confirm the diminishing importance that governments attach to education.

ASUU’s case is exceptional, in that governments appeared concerned. When the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, went on strike, it took almost three months before governments started talking to the union. The issue remains partially resolved.

With the ASUU strike, the failure of governments and their programmes are obvious. Governments sign agreements they do not intend to keep. ASUU is on strike over a 2009 agreement. Governments want to re-negotiate implementation of a four-year-old agreement.

They also know that the negotiations for a new agreement are due. We have governments that plan for immediate needs, if they ever do. They are exhausting themselves over ASUU strike as if meeting ASUU’s demands would resolve the challenges that our education faces, among them irrelevant curricula.

How do governments spend billions of Naira they budget annually for education? Bureaucracy consumes the bulk of the money. Duplication of agencies that manage education is the biggest cost centre in our national education management. Governments are running up new costs.

New higher institutions are being built with emphases on physical structures. Laboratories, libraries and research centres that they require to be centres for meaningful academic engagements are available in inadequate numbers.

It is absurd that governments — the owners of the universities — would need an ASUU strike to determine the status of the facilities in universities.

What plans do governments have for education? How would they tackle sustainable funding so that we are not soon back to another wave of strikes in a matter of months?  Would governments ever consider education important enough that it should run without disruptions from strike?

There would be no easy solutions. Many of the federal agencies on education just drain resources that should have been invested in improving learning facilities. States imitate the federal waste, making education one of governments’ biggest cost centres, without commensurate value for the expenditures.

Governments can save costs by eliminating duplication in the functions of education agencies. There should be clearer lines about the roles of governments at different levels of education. The Federal Government should not be dabbling into primary school education.

Finally, the future of education is too important to be left to haphazard funding. Governments should provide resources for education beyond ASUU’s demands.

And so Nigeria killed Festus Iyayi. . . .

He was one of our very best: creative, energetic, dependable, and forthright. We were there in 1980 (with the then young and irrepressible Tunde Fatunde) when what we call ASUU (Academic Staff Union of Universities) today was in its infancy. Iyayi served the Union tirelessly and loyally, becoming its President in 1986, by popular acclamation. I worked with Iyayi, and saw him at close quarters. Fearless but fair, courageous but compassionate, demanding but decent, Iyayi was a great leader and an even greater follower, the kind who pressed on when others were seized by trepidation and despair. There is a painful logic in the fact he met his death while on a vital errand for our beloved ASUU.

Iyayi was a Balogun of the Barricades in our struggle against military dictatorship and our battle for Human Rights. He gave so generously, so valuably of himself and his inexhaustible physical and mental resources. Like the great Nelson Mandela, he could have said, without any fear of contradiction, that the struggle was his life.

All these virtues informed every line he wrote, from creative works to occasional interventions in the media. Art for Human Sake; clear illumination of the past; sensitive appreciation of the present; intelligent apprehension and anticipation of the future: Iyayi is a writer with the answerable vision. He chose his heroes very carefully, very judiciously. He ridiculed tyrants out of their despotic inclinations, challenged the unaccountably wealthy to show the source of their loot; urged the pauperized and the marginalized to interrogate the grounds for their plight instead of merely collapsing under its weight. Iyayi's blood boiled at the sight of injustice. Whenever he raised his voice it was to denounce the monsters that make progress impossible by laying us low. Iyayi challenged, then redefined our concept of heroism, for he knew that many of those propped up as heroes are nothing short of heinous villains; that many of our so-called giants are smaller than ants. His novel on the Nigerian civil war is never ambiguous as to who the real heroes of that war are, and where to look for the villains.

For many of his readers, Violence remains his all-time classic. In this unforgettable novel, Iyayi invites us to a Fanonian aetiology of violence, its actuation, and awful ramifications. In this heart-rendering story, we meet a millionaire who never labours for his money but uses it to take advantage of the moneyless; we meet young people so desperate, so  poor – no, impoverished –  that they are forced to sell their very blood for money for the very basic essentials of life. We encounter the uncommon courage and stoicism of the poor and lowly and the callous bestiality of the rich and powerful. In the annals of African fiction, only Ousmane Sembene’s God’s Bit of Wood and Ngugi wa Thion’go’s Petals of Blood have dissected Africa’s social reality in such gripping detail and with such committed panache. I love all Iyayi’s works with a passion, but for me, Violence remains for him what Things Fall Apart is for Chinua Achebe: a magnificent story ennobled by unforced lyricism and spontaneous narrativity. Violence marked a new accent in Nigerian fiction when it appeared in the late 1970’s. In many ways, it is the harbinger for the likes of E.E.Sule’s Sterile Sky published about three decades later.

     Personally, to encounter Festus was to get ready to fall in love with him. Natural. Unabashedly, unapologetically natural. Humorous and always loaded with funny anecdotes, Festus took the sting out of the scorpion of the Nigerian jungle by laughing and helping others to laugh at its countless foibles. Victim of incarceration, unwarranted sack, vilification, and other abuses, he was always ready to forge ahead. Utterly disenchanted with Nigeria’s present, he never lost hope in her future. Festus was a comrade who was also a friend, a fellow-traveller and a brother.

     And so Nigeria killed Iyayi. Nigeria, that dragon which feeds so insatiably upon the most precious of its own eggs. We lost a gallant fighter and great patriot. Terrible. Unspeakably terrible. Behold the terrifying irony: the patriot who labored so tirelessly to rid his country of violence has become a victim of her egregious violence.

Yet another chapter in our running saga of waste. . . .

Adieu, brave comrade. Nigeria’s wasters are still here, Awaiting Court-Marshall.

Nigeria win Under-17 World Cup

Nigeria won the Under-17 World Cup for a record fourth time on Friday with a 3-0 win over champions Mexico.

Erick Aguirre's own goal put the Golden Eaglets in front in Abu Dhabi.

The Nigerians doubled their lead with a tap in from Kelechi Iheanacho before captain Musa Mohamed's free kick sealed the win.

Nigeria also picked up the tournament's fair-play award and Dele Alampasu was awarded the Golden Glove for being the best goalkeeper.

The first goal came after nine minutes from a Nigerian counter-attack moments after the Mexicans had threatened at the other end.

The Golden Eaglets broke quickly to create a three-against-one situation, and as Musa Yahaya was about to pull the trigger, Aguirre's attempted clearance ended up in his own net.

Yahaya nearly doubled the lead in the 39th minute but his shot crashed against the bar.

Moments later, Taiwo Awoniyi tried a spectacular overhead kick but it went straight into the arms Raul Gudino in the Mexican goal.

Mexico threatened the Nigerian goal a couple of times in the first half but found Alampasu in inspired form.

The Mexicans pressed early in the second half but it was Nigeria who doubled their lead when Gudino parried a long range shot into the path of Kelechi Iheanacho, who tapped in for his sixth goal of the tournament.

With 15 minutes left on the clock, the Mexicans had a great chance to score but Ivan Ochoa headed wide.

The title was sealed when captain Mohamed curled a free kick round the wall from the edge of the area with nine minutes left.

The victory in the United Arab Emirates caps a successful year for Nigeria after the senior team won the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa in January.

Golden Eaglets conquered the world

Nigeria Golden Eaglets became the most successful team in FIFA U-17 World Cup history with a 3-0 win over holders Mexico at the Mohammad Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

The final was a rematch of the 6-1 win Nigeria inflicted on the Mexicans in Group F play and sees the Golden Eaglets lay hands on the junior world trophy for the fourth time in their history, one better than South American giants Brazil. When the final whistle went in the UAE capital, fans and players alike rejoiced, fingers pointed to the sky, with what has become the traditional Nigerian celebration of: “yes, yes yes!”


Mexico kept the ball for a full two minutes at the start of the game, moving it around well and making the Nigerians chase. El Tri even managed the first chance on goal after six minutes. Osvaldo Rodriguez crossed from the left, but Alejandro Diaz couldn’t keep his close-range effort the right side of the post. Two minutes on and Ivan Ochoa – who scored twice in the semi-final win over Argentina – saw his off-balance header pushed over the bar by Dele Alampasu.

The corner came to nothing for the Mexicans, but Nigeria benefitted greatly by bursting out on a classic counter-attack. Kelechi Iheanacho went flying up the pitch. With just one Mexican defender in position, the No10 Golden Eaglet laid the ball in for Taiwo Awoniyi who then fed it on to Musa Yahaha, who had a little help from Erick Aguirre. The Mexican midfielder mistakenly hit the ball into his own net in an attempt to recover.

With the score 1-0, Musa Muhammed was giving the Mexicans fits with his rampaging runs up the right side. He pinned the opponents back at every opportunity. As the first half pushed toward the interval, the Africans upped their tempo in search of a second goal. Yahaya rattled the crossbar with a stunning effort from 20 yards out after 38 minutes. Pressure was mounting and the fans in the stands were on their feet when Awoniyi’s bicycle-kick from the penalty spot forced Raul Gudino into a magnificent reaction save in the dying moments of the half.

The second period began with a frenzy of attacks at both ends of the pitch, but it was Nigeria who made theirs count, making it 2-0 in the 56th minute. Captain Muhammed unleashed a wicked swirling shot that Mexican keeper Gudino simply couldn’t hang on to. He spilled a rebound directly to the feet of the most dangerous man on the pitch, and Iheanacho made no mistake dispatching his sixth goal of the tournament.

With a quarter-hour to go, Mexico managed to carve out a rare second-half chance, but Ochoa’s header from close-range slipped wide of the post as the holders began to wilt under the ceaseless pressure of the buzzing Nigerians. Muhammed added a third with ten minutes to go, curling a sublime free-kick into the top corner.

This is the moment a best man and the organiser of a sham wedding stopped at BHS to pick up a wedding dress and tiara for the fake bride on the way to the ceremony.

Nigerian-born Abiola Kumoye and Ayodeji Abbis have been jailed after admitting their part in the elaborate plot to keep fellow Nigerian and University of Hull masters student Jayeola Abiola in the country by holding a sham wedding held in Hull, East Yorkshire.

Law student Abbis agreed on the morning of the wedding to be best man for £1,000, yet had never met the groom until they arrived at the wedding venue.

The 27-year-old denied knowing it was a sham or that he was paid £1,000, claiming the money was owed to him by an associate of Abiola.

Prosecutor Edward Bindloss said: 'Was it a coincidence the money was paid in to his account on the same day of the wedding?

'This was his reward for being a valued and important part of that sham marriage. He was the best man for a complete stranger and there to make money.'

Abiola faced being booted out of Britain because his visa was running out and had planned to pay others £5,000 for organising the wedding at Hull’s Guildhall.

He even picked Celine Dion’s The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face as the wedding song for the big day.

Father-of-two, Kumoye, 34, was paid £2,150 by Abiola for 'luring' the bride, Portuguese-born Vania Pinheiro-Fernandes and providing her with his ex-wife’s passport.

Kumoye and Pinheiro-Fernandes then travelled in convoy with Abbis from Leeds to Hull on the day of the wedding, stopping off at British Home Stores to pick up her wedding dress and tiara.

 Vania Pinheiro-Fernandes was jailed for eight months for being a fake bride. Officers of the UK Border Agency had been tipped off by the Hull Registrar that the couple seemed to barely know each other

Abbis said he only went because he was not working at the British Gas call centre that day and 'had nothing else to do'.

When the wedding party arrived UK Border Agency officers, who were tipped off by a suspicious Hull registrar after the couple seemed to barely know each other during their rehearsal interview, were waiting.

Kumoye and Abbis were arrested and charged with conspiracy to breach immigration laws in January.

The bride and groom were jailed for eight and 12 months respectively in July.

Abbis was sentenced to eight months while Kumoye was jailed for 16 months.

Judge Singh said: 'If it wasn’t for the eagle-eyed registrar, it would have gone ahead, everything was planned.

'The groom had even chosen the rather apt song of The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. This offence strikes at the heart of immigration and marriage itself.'

Eaglets’ll be turbo-charged against Mexico

Coach Manu Garba said yesterday  that the Golden Eaglets will be turbo-charged to defeat Mexico in Friday’s final of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Abu Dhabi.

Garba last night saw his charges steam-roll their way to the final of the tournament, with a comprehensive 3-0 bashing of Sweden at the Rashid Stadium in Dubau and speaking at the post-match conference, a jubilant coach said he was in seventh heaven to see his troops damage their Scandinavians, who he praised for reaching this stage of the tournament.

While also hailing Mexico for reaching the final after suffering a 6-0 opening defeat against the Eaglets, Garba said he was confident that his troops would make it a double against the North American side, who have ousted Brazil and Uruguay to reach the summit.

“Sweden tried  but we showed our quality. I commend my players for achieving this victory and hope for a similar performance against Mexico, who I commend for getting to this stage.

They have done well and earned their place in the final but my team are turbo-charged for
the final.

“We have come this far, playing well and it is time for God to crown our efforts with the Cup on Friday.”
