ASUU dares FG over sack

Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities [ASUU], Calabar Zone, has reacted angrily to the order to return to the classrooms issued to them by the Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, saying that the action would worsen the strike action rather than solving the problem.

ASUU accused the minister of deceiving  President Jonathan on the crisis, alleging that Wike and some other unnamed officials of the Government did not want the lingering problem between the union and the Federal Government to be resolved.

According to the zonal coordinator of ASUU Calabar zone, Dr. Charles Ononuju, with such threat the crisis would linger far longer than expected.

In a statement in Umuahia,. Ononuju said that the union received with shock the pronouncement by the supervising minister, saying the crisis could not be resolved that way.

“We received with shock the pronouncement of by the Supervising Minister of Education, Wike, that lecturers should resume work or be sacked”, Ononuju said.

He said that the union had gone far with discussion on how to resolve the crisis and was waiting for President Goodluck Jonathan’s reply to their letter after their meeting when the minister came up with the “unfortunate” pronouncement.

“Sacking lecturers will not solve the problem but will compound it. Wike should resign and come to the university and teach. This is not the way to go if they go this way, the crisis will not be resolved in the next 100 years”, he warned

FG CONDEMNS ASUU’S NEW DEMANDS

ABUJA — The Federal Government, yesterday, condemned the new conditions which Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, insists must be met before the five-month old strike could be called off.

The three conditions were payment of four months salaries, which accumulated during the period of the strike; immediate implementation of the N1.2 trillion offered by the government to public universities, starting with the release of N100 billion this year and the balance of N1.1 trillion to be spread over five years from 2014.

The union also demanded that the salary arrears must not be paid in piecemeal.



These were some of the resolutions reached by members of the National Executive Council, NEC, of the union that met in Kano on Friday.

Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, condemned the new conditions but assured that he would present them before President Goodluck Jonathan.

EBSU breaks ranks, recalls students

Meanwhile, the management of Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, EBSU, yesterday ordered lecturers and students of the institution to return to classes following the inability of ASUU to end its strike.

A statement by the Registrar of the institution, Mr. Sam Egwu, stressed that the institution had resolved to resume academic activities regardless of the ASUU-FG dispute, adding that academic activities would resume in all the campuses of the institution from today, Tuesday, November 26.

EBSU chapter of ASUU however, said that lecturers would not return to classes until their demands were met in line with the position of its national body.

Primate Babatunde Ayodele, General Overseer of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Lagos, bares his mind on the proposed National Conference, Nigeria’s fate in the hands of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in 2015, the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, airplane crashes and the crisis rocking the polity. Excerpts:

Is there any spiritual undertone to airplane crashes  in Nigeria?

There is. When there is a cleansing for the whole nation, then the aviation sector will be calm. For now, there are still going to be troubles in the sector and some ministers will be removed from the cabinet. I could see some averted plane crashes, but still, I advise that the air force and police watch their aircraft very well. The presidential fleet should also be guarded against technical faults.

Nigerians do not respect God, that is why the Dana plane crash occurred the other time despite warnings from God. That also is exactly what is affecting this government. There’s going to be a lot of political turmoil in the polity. Governor Rotimi Amaechi particularly has to be very careful because they want to ground him politically; they want to rubbish him.

He also should manage his court cases well. Kwara State’s Bukola too should manage his court cases so they are not used against him. Akpabio and Presidency will face challenges. The seven governors in the New Peoples Democratic Party-nPDP- will come back to
PDP; they’re just wasting their time. The All Progressive Congress, APC, will be a strong opposition but it will not be able to overthrow the PDP in 2015.

In the end, where are these leading us; will they work in our favour as a nation?

Nigeria needs a lot of prayers to avert dangers ahead. I’ve said it several times that Nigeria is  going to break. Even this National Conference will take us nowhere! Kidnapping for instance has come to stay! Government will only do its best but it is coming to the South-west as well.   Before Nigeria splits however, we need prayers to sustain the country and end disasters. The problem is that we have a president who has turned deaf hears to the word of God. AndCAN is unfortunately nothing to write about.

You just said the national confab will lead us nowhere while most people seem optimistic about it…

There will be elections in 2015. However, the National Conference is a mere waste of resources and time because nothing will come out of it. Even when decisions are taken at the end of the conference, they will not be executed. When the time comes for a genuine National Conference, you will see the signs and be convinced. But this particular conference has a lot of political undertones which I will not disclose because I am speaking as a prophet, not a political analyst. I therefore want to rename it a ‘corrupt national conference’.

But is Jonathan the best candidate for 2015?

Jonathan’s second term will cause some problem in this country. I see republics coming out. Mind you, may have more pipeline explosions and bombing is not over. Jonathan is not fighting Boko Haram the way he is supposed to fight it! The truth is, Boko Haram is more spiritual than physical and until the sect is weakened spiritually, it will not go.

Are you indirectly advising Jonathan to step down since you’ve said his second term will not be fantastic?

If I say he should step down, he will not listen. So, I will let him go and see the consequences. The only way forward is to consult God. By a very slim chance, he will get his second term, but that second term will not be fantastic.

Where exactly has CAN gone wrong?

They go to Mr.President every now and then, why can they not advise him on what to do and what not to do? Truth is bitter but you have to say it! CAN is political! Ayo Oritsejafor is not operating as CAN but as a Christian politician. CAN is blindfolded and there is no leadership in it.  That’s why we’re getting so many things wrong in Christendom.

CAN doesn’t know how many churches we have in the country, it has not created any youth empowerment or pastors’ empowerment. CAN should be scrapped. Christianity is not how rich you are but how well you’ve been able to touch the lives of others. CAN should employ not less than 20,000 youths and should do something about women, widows. The truth is: Ayo Oritsejafor is a politician and  not a pastor. If any white garment church should invite Ayo, he won’t go! We need somebody who is more vibrant as CAN leader.

What if he is turning down their invitations because he doesn’t see them to be genuine?

Is he God to say a church is not genuine? Any man who does that is not a pastor! It’s not your right to say you are holy!

But the Bible says God has blessed us with the spirit of discernment…

Can Ayo see? Is he a prophet? How can he tell me his spirit discerns? White garment churches are among the best worldwide! That’s why you see influential men and women going to them for prayers! Why don’t they remain in their Pentecostal churches? Even pastors from Pentecostal churches go to white garment churches to consult privately and get spiritual powers. I am a godfather to many Pentecostal churches but I have no godfather! God is my only father in the Lord!

ASUU STRIKE COMING TO AN END?...STRIKE: FG, ASUU SHIFT GROUNDS

THERE are strong indications that the protracted strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, that has crippled academic activities for over four months may end in the next one week, Vanguard has gathered.

Vanguard sources at the Monday night meeting between the Federal Government led by President Goodluck Jonathan, the leadership of ASUU, Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, said both the Federal Government and leaders of ASUU had shifted grounds and leaders of ASUU would meet with its organ (National Executive Council) to brief members of the outcome and then take necessary action.

One of the sources told Vanguard: “Both the Federal Government and the leadership of ASUU are now on the same page. Both parties have shifted grounds. The leadership of ASUU will now meet with its appropriate organ to brief its members and take the necessary action.

“ASUU is in the right position to inform the public after meeting with its organ. However, I can tell you that all things being equal, the strike should be over in the next one week.”

The meeting between the government and the labour leaders started at about 2:30pm on Monday and ended at about 3:30am on Tuesday with a 15 minutes break.

Fagge, Wogu speak

National President of ASUU, Dr. Nasir Isa Fagge, emerged from the meeting and curtly told newsmen that his delegation was taking back a message from President Jonathan to their members.

He declined to disclose what the message was and when asked whether he was satisfied with the outcome of the meeting, the ASUU leader told journalists not to put words in his mouth.

He said: “We have had a lengthy meeting with Mr. President, rubbing minds on how best to address the problem of university education in this country.

“We now have a message from Mr. President that we are going to take to our members and we are expecting that our members will respond appropriately to his message.”

The Minister of Labour, Chief Emeka Wogu, who also attended the meeting, told journalists after the meeting that certain mileage had been attained and expressed the hope that the university lecturers would call off the strike soon.

He said: “The President of ASUU told you that they are going back with a message from the Federal Government to their members and the message is full of high expectation and hope.

“Our prayer is that they will come back with a positive outcome. They might even not come back to meet us. They might take decisions that will meet your expectations.”

According to the Minister, what government brought to the negotiation table were offers that were in tandem with the 2009 agreements between it and ASUU, pointing out that since the strike was based on the 2009 agreement, the government did not go beyond that agreement.

President Jonathan, who led the Federal Government’s delegation, was joined by Vice President Namadi Sambo; Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim; Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike; and minister of Labour, Emeka Wogu.

The ASUU delegation was led by its President, Dr. Nasiru Fagge; past presidents such as Professor Abdulahi Sule-Kano, Dr. Dipo Fashina and Professor Festus Iyayi.

Other members of the delegation were Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, Prof. Victor Osodeke, Prof. Suleiman Abdul, Dr. Victor Igbum and Mr. Michael Odunmoraye.

President NLC, Abdulawahid Omar and TUC, Bobboi Kaigama, also attended the meeting.

While exchanging pleasantries with the ASUU delegation, President Jonathan had told them “I hope this strike will end today. Our children have suffered enough. We must find a solution.”

AT LAST...FG APPROVES EMPLOYMENT OF ENGLISH, MATHEMATICS TEACHERS...SHALL WE LAUGH OR CRY?

The Federal Government has granted approval for the immediate employment of about 1, 000 teachers of Mathematics and English Language towards addressing the shortage of teachers in these critical subjects. Minister of State for Education, Chief Ezenwo Nyesom Wike has said.

The minister dropped the hint at the National Mathematical Centre, Sheda, Abuja while declaring open the ‘Batch One’ of a two-week capacity building workshop for Mathematics and English Language teachers in Federal Unity Colleges.

Wike warned the 144 participants of the workshop to justify government’s financial commitment to the project and directed the workshop facilitators to conduct an evaluation test at the end of the exercise which would serve as guide for the government as to who is fit to be retained as teachers in these subjects.

According to him, it would not be business as usual for both principals and teachers in Federal Unity Colleges, stressing that sentiments would not be entertained from any quarter in terms of posting and transfers in the colleges. He maintained that the colleges must uphold their role as standard bearers for secondary education in Nigeria in line with the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr Mac John Nwaobiala, attributed the appalling performance of students in Mathematics and English Language partly to poor teaching methods; hence he described the workshop as a step in the right direction.

Director of Basic Education in the ministry, D. C. Uwaezuoke commended the minister for his trailblazing role in reintroducing training programmes for teachers, quoting some of the participants as saying that they never received such training in the last 15 yrs.

FG reassures on UTME, NECO

LAGOS — INDICATIONS emerged, yesterday, that the Federal Government may have soft-pedaled on the scrapping of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, examination, UTME; and the National Examinations Council, NECO, as recommended by the Mr. Steve Oransoye-led committee, which had generated mixed reactions.

This came as apprehension gripped over 2,000 workers of JAMB, who may lose their jobs if the recommendations by the committee on the restructuring of the Federal Government agencies and parastatals are implemented

In Ado Ekiti, yesterday, Senior Special Assistant, SSA, to President Goodluck Jonathan on Youth and Student Matters, Jude Imagwe, said Federal Government was not considering scrapping UTME and NECO.

The SSA, who spoke at Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, during a workshop on teaching/learning method, said the bodies were set up by laws for specific purposes.

Imagwe noted that the recommendations of the Oronsanye committee may not be unconnected with the fact that a lot of government agencies were performing similar roles and functions, saying “at the end of the day, we will keep our own. NECO will be strengthened.”

Meanwhile, organised labour in JAMB, Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, and Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, ASCSN, have vowed to challenge the report in court should the Federal Government implement it.

In an address by Mr. Samuel Azaba and Mr. Isaiah Adeigbe, branch Chairmen of NASU and ASCSN, respectively, and Mr. Stephen Ignatius, NASU Secretary and his counterpart from ASCSN, Mr. Adederin Adegoke, the unions said instead of scrapping the institutions, government should establish more to accommodate the about 1.7 million students seeking admission in about 400 institutions in the country.
